The Warpzone BBS is now running on a real Amiga 2000 computer! Running
CNet 5.07a with 10 nodes. Has chat, games (more soon) and forums.
Dont forget chat night Monday nights at 7PM Mountain time!

Thanks,

Tom

Why do people want to run a bbs on a real amiga? I loved my Amiga, don't
get me wrong. But doesn't running Winuae and bbs software offer better
performance? Just curious.

I don't get it either... the PC offers better performance on cheaper
hardware that you don't have to worry about breaking down as even the
newest Amigas are about 10-12 years old! Most are older! I like the
Amiga too, but if you can do the same job on faster, cheaper
equipment... then it only makes sense!

This may be true and all, but how much CPU power do you need to run a
BBS? Its a BBS after all, not a complex calculation to find out the
ultimate question after all.

My Amiga should be hooked back up soon.. Good for ircing and Some light
web stuff, specially when the winboxes are down for
repairs/backups/upgrades/etc.

I can say without a doubt that running CNet on a real Amiga is far better...

My emulated system was:
AMD 2400+ Athlon XP
768MB RAM
nVidia 32MB video card
latest WinUAE, latest CNet

My real Amiga:
Amiga 2000 w/ w2.04 ROM
GVP 030/25mhz
14MB RAM
WB 2.1 w/ AmiTCP

The Amiga will run for weeks with NO PROBLEMS whatsoever. The PC would lock up every other day, wouldn’t keep time right and was slower!!

BTW, BBS is down now because switched to DSL and hadn't time to reconfigure yet.

Thanks,

Tom

Hmm... that's interesting. Black Phantom's BBS runs faster on his A1,
but back when he had it on a PC under WINUAE, it ran far faster than
Rinaldo's BBS on a true A4000.

My own BBS runs faster under WinUAE that it did on the A2000/030 that
it used run on back in the day.

The system clock DOES suck under WinUAE though... You lose a lot of
speed if you have the "maintain chipset timing" option checked, which is
the only way to keep the clock correct.

if I configured winuae right it would be faster but cpu ran at 100% all the time and blew a cpu, motherboard and powersupply. it still locked up a lot. I didn’t think 2000/030 was slow at all for this. I highly recommend the real Amiga for any CNet operator. it just runs better with no lockups. the A1 might be a different story, but why spend that much for a BBS?

The last couple revisions of WinUAE had a CPU adjuster that would
allow you to set the CPU usage... I keep mine down around 40% or so.

Ideally, I WOULD run on a real Amiga, suped up. I don't have the desk
space though, and the Amiga chews up a considerably larger amount of
electricity than my AMD system.

I used latest winuae and adjusted cpu...made it slow, real amiga is faster this way. still locked up and time screwed. real timing never fixed clock.

*sigh* if Only Commodore had better marketing and were able to
continue developing the OS while going to a PC-like expansion structure
with Motorola CPU's, we could be talking about multiple GHz real Amigas
and AOS v7.0 or something. lol
